Our Guiding & Defining Ideas

When was the last time you played in a sandbox? If you’re like me, it’s been quite a long time. Yet it’s likely you recall what it was like to “play well with others” within the safe confines of the sandbox. Let me introduce the Nav Neighbors Guiding & Defining Ideas "sandbox" that helps all of us in this Mission of The Navigators to minister and partner well with others.

An Invaluable Leadership Lesson

As a young leader in a national role many years ago, I learned an invaluable leadership lesson. I had just finished casting a vision for a new ministry. Immediately, experienced staff began pulling me aside to privately ask questions. While I had stressed where we were going, I failed to emphasize what we were taking with us.

Why "Nav Neighbors"?

Of all the names we could have selected for this Mission, why Nav Neighbors? Of course, there’s rich and deep biblical meaning behind the word “neighbor.” Most notably, Jesus said all of the Law and Prophets hang on two commandments—to love God with your whole being and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39).

Communicate, communicate, communicate

In the midst of change, most leaders under-communicate. That’s why change leaders emphatically challenge: “communicate, communicate, communicate.” In the midst of The Navigators' recent structure change and launch of the Nav Neighbors Mission, you need to know where Nav Neighbors is going and how we intend to get there. Thus, welcome to my blog—the first of a number of blogs to unpack our Guiding & Defining Ideas.
